Stay Away from Windows Vista

Although this blog’s name isn’t specific to the XP version of Microsoft Windows, for the moment that’s the only version of Windows I recommend. Why? Because it’s the most commonly used version of Windows right now (2007) and that means:

  • It’s likely to stay the most common version for at least another few years,
  • It’s the most well-supported, by software and especially by the manufacturers of hardware who write drivers (video, sound, motherboards, peripherals, etc.),
  • It’s the most tested, and most patched and fixed,
  • It’s the cheapest version - it probably was included with your PC.

If you are not a PC hobbyist or Microsoft developer and you’re actually using your PC to get work done, there’s no reason to upgrade to Vista. NONE. Resist the marketing demons whispering in your ears, saying you can’t be productive/hip without it!

I know people who hastily upgraded from XP to Vista, and are now regretting it: days of work lost to reconfiguring, re-installing, and other ridiculous wastes of time, just to do the same thing they were doing before: word processing, spreadsheets, email, and websurfing! Worse still, you can’t downgrade back to XP either to make all the pain go away. So just don’t do it.

If you get Vista new with a new machine; then sure, go from there.  But if you have Windows XP already, stay with it.

FileZilla 2.2 sucks

You Call this an FTP Client??

I happened to use FileZilla 2.2.x recently on my girlfriend’s PC, and to my utter amazement, when you download a file, you cannot easily specify where the file goes, open the directory where it went, or otherwise track it down! At least, I couldn’t figure it out within a few minutes, and I’m no newbie to computers and software. This is absurd, and I’d have to say it SUCKS. Maybe the upcoming version 3 will fix this blatant lapse in UI (user-interface) design. Use SmartFTP instead.

Let’s Get Started

Does your @#$# PC work?? This blog will help you keep your Windows XP machine (laptop or desktop) running clean and lean, so you can actually get things done with it. Oh, and we’ll only use free software to do that - why should you pay just so the damn thing works?

I’m a professional programmer and minor hardware hacker (I always custom build my PCs) who believes,

  1. Less is more - here, the less software on your PC, the better
  2. Freeware (free software) is a wonderful thing
  3. Your PC should be working for you, and not getting in your way

Sound good? Then read on, let’s get the machine clean and productive. :-)
